It was a grey afternoon when we visited Dortmund Christmas market. The crowds got off the train, and we were carried forward in the midst of their chatter towards the church and the shopping area. Turning a corner, the most enormous Christmas tree towered above us, soaring over the tops of the stalls as darkening rain clouds scudded overhead. Dortmund's remarkable Christmas tree structure is composed of 1,700 evergreens rising 15 stories above Hansaplatz. Nearly 50,000 lights are necessary to fully illuminate the tree at night — a spectacular sight that is visible for several blocks. The tree isn't the only thing that's big; this market has more than 300 stands and a stage with daily performances.

As always Dortmund provides a fantastic place to enjoy all the delights of a 300+ stall Christmas market stretched across the city centre with a wide range of arts, crafts, food and drinks. Great pubs serving local food and with DAB, Their, Brinkhoffs and Kronen (my favirite) beers, all brewed in Dortmund, a great place for a drink. But some are built by Christmas tree builders (yes, this is a job) by riveting together lots of bits of other Christmas trees.
